How to Set Up Claude for Small Business in 2026 (The Right Way)

By Ekwy Chukwuji · 8 min read

You are paying for Claude. You open Claude Cowork to run your business, and it still behaves like a blank chat window that knows nothing about your customers, your tools, or how you actually make money. That is the gap. The fix is one button inside the Claude for Small Business plugin that almost nobody clicks, and it rebuilds the entire plugin around your business in about two minutes.

This is the exact setup process I ran live for my own consulting firm, Byte of Brilliance. The difference between the generic plugin and the customized version is night and day, and you do not write a single line of config to get there.

Why the Claude for Small Business plugin feels generic out of the box

Last month Anthropic launched a plugin called Claude for Small Business: fifteen workflows and a set of skills that plug straight into the tools you already run, like QuickBooks, PayPal, and Gmail. The plugin ships with around 31 skills and 15 connectors in total, which is a lot of capability sitting in one place.

Here is the problem. Out of the box it is generic. It does not know anything about you. So most people install it, run a workflow, get back a generic summary, and conclude that the plugin does not understand their business. The plugin is not broken. It was simply never told who you are.

That is the entire reason this setup matters. You do not need fifteen AI tools to run a small business. You need one plugin set up properly, and almost nobody is setting it up properly.

How to set up Claude for Small Business, step by step

The whole process is install, customize, answer a few questions, test. Here is each step.

1. Install the plugin

Inside Claude Cowork, go to Customize, then Plugins. Click the plus, browse plugins, and type "small business" into the search bar. The Claude for Small Business plugin comes up. Click Install.

2. Click the Customize button (this is the step everyone misses)

Once it is installed, click Manage. You will see a button that says Customize. This is the one nobody clicks. Clicking it drops you straight into a chat with Claude and activates the customization prompt for you. You do not even type the prompt. The button creates and runs it.

3. Answer Claude's questions about your business

Claude then asks you four quick questions about how you actually operate. In my case it asked about my payment system, how I track customers, and which workflow areas are a priority. I answered: Stripe for payments, a custom LinkedIn CRM plus a spreadsheet tracker, and my priorities of client and cash flow invoicing, lead scoring, and pipeline.

Claude read the full plugin and reported back:

Your business, Byte of Brilliance, is a consulting services firm, so several of these skills need reframing.

That single sentence is why so many people struggle. The plugin ships configured for a generic retail business with product sales and inventory. If you sell services, it needs reframing, and the Customize button does that reframing automatically.

4. Let Claude swap your connectors and rewrite the config

From four answers, Claude rebuilt the plugin across all the skills. It swapped the connectors, baking in Stripe as the primary payment source and removing PayPal and Square, while keeping QuickBooks as optional. It even added ConvertKit and Blotato, the tools I use for email and social scheduling, without my asking, because it recognized them from the conversation.

It also updated the MCP config. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, which works like a USB connection that lets Claude talk to your other tools. Because the connectors changed, the config had to change with them, and Claude handled that in the background. Finally, it packaged everything as a customized plugin file for me to save and install.

5. Run a test workflow to confirm it worked

To confirm the setup, run one simple workflow. I ran the Monday morning brief, which produces a one-page snapshot of cash position, sales trend, pipeline movement, and the week's commitments. It ran cleanly under my customized plugin, which is how you know the setup took.

Generic plugin vs your customized plugin

AreaGeneric plugin (default)After you click Customize
PaymentsPayPal and QuickBooksStripe as primary, QuickBooks optional
Customer trackingGeneric CRM assumptionCustom LinkedIn CRM plus spreadsheet
Skills framingRetail, product sales, inventoryReframed for a services business
ProductsSKUs (stock keeping units)Your actual services
ConfigAnthropic's default connectorsMCP config rebuilt around your tools
Extra toolsNoneConvertKit and Blotato added automatically

The lesson is the same one I teach corporate teams every week. The tool is excellent. The setup is what unlocks it.

One thing to remember after setup

After Claude packages your plugin, save it and install the connectors it recommends. In the video I had to go install Stripe myself, since Claude swaps the connector references but you still authorize the live connection. Skip that and your workflows will reference a tool that is not connected yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Claude for Small Business plugin?
It is a plugin from Anthropic with fifteen workflows and around 31 skills that connect Claude Cowork to small business tools like QuickBooks, PayPal, Gmail, and more. It handles tasks like cash flow briefs, invoice chasing, and lead scoring once it is customized to your business.
Why does Claude for Small Business feel generic when I install it?
Out of the box the plugin is configured for a generic retail business and knows nothing about your tools or workflows. Clicking the Customize button under Manage lets Claude reframe every skill around your actual business in about two minutes.
Do I need to know how to code to set up the plugin?
No. The Customize button runs the setup prompt for you and rewrites the connectors and config automatically. You answer a few plain-English questions about your business and Claude does the technical work.
What is an MCP config in Claude?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, which lets Claude communicate with your other tools the way a USB connection links devices. When the plugin swaps your connectors, it updates the MCP config so Claude points at the tools you actually use.
How do I know the setup worked?
Run one simple workflow, such as the Monday morning brief, after customizing. If it returns a snapshot that reflects your real business context rather than a generic summary, your setup is correct.
